1. Confirm You Actually Need 5015
Pick 5015 when:
- Moving high current in few contacts (up to ~150–225 A depending on series/contact size)
- Existing platform already uses MS310x / MS340x / MS345x interfaces
- Budget and multi-vendor supply beat weight/density
- Field repair with standard crimp/solder tooling is required
Do not pick 5015 for high-density signal racks (use 38999) or compact quick-disconnect panels (use 26482).
2. Decode the Full Part Number (Never Order by Shell Size Alone)
Example:
"MS3106A18-1P"
- MS3106 = straight plug shell style (3100 wall rcpt, 3102 box rcpt, 3108 right-angle plug)
- A = service class (A non-environmental, E/F/R environmental with grommet/seal)
- 18 = shell size (~1‑1/8″ thread), not pin count
- 1 = insert arrangement 18-1 = 10 cavities of size #16 per MIL-STD-1651, not 1 contact
- P = pin contacts (S = socket; P/S is gender, not plug/socket)
- Optional W/X/Y/Z = alternate keying rotation to stop twin-connector mismating
Rule: "5015 size 18 10-pin" is not a procure-able spec. Quote the full
"MS3106A18-1P" plus finish, keying, and backshell.
3. Specify These 9 Attributes on Every RFQ
1. Standard: MIL-DTL-5015 (legacy) or SAE AS50151 (current)
2. Shell style: 3100 / 3101 / 3102 / 3106 / 3108
3. Class: A, B, E, F, R, L, W… (drives sealing & env rating)
4. Shell size + insert arrangement (e.g., 18-1, 20-27, 28-21)
5. Contact type: P or S
6. Series / termination: Series I solder (MS310x), Series II front-release crimp (MS340x), Series III rear-release crimp (MS345x)
7. Shell material & finish: aluminum OD cad (legacy/ITAR), electroless nickel, zinc cobalt, stainless (RoHS-alt)
8. Alternate key position: N (omit) / W / X / Y / Z
9. Accessories: cable clamp (MS3057), backshell, gasket, contacts (if body ships less-contacts)
4. Series Choice = Tooling & Repair Path
- Series I (MS310x, solder): cheapest, stable, no insertion gun, weak for high-vibration field repair
- Series II (MS340x, front-release crimp): removable from front, needs proper extraction tool
- Series III (MS345x, rear-release crimp): modern maintainable crimp, preferred for new rugged builds
5. Environmental & Electrical Checks
- Temp: −55 °C to +125 °C (Class A) or up to +200 °C (some classes)
- Sealing: Class A = none; Class E/F/R = grommet seal; confirm IP67 only when mated + clamped
- Current: check per contact size (#16 ≈ 13 A, #12 ≈ 23 A, #8/#4/#0 scale up; arrangement sets mix) — never assume from pin count
- Vibration: threaded coupling + safety wire is fine for ground/gen-set; not for airframe high-g without verification
6. Quality, Compliance & Supply Chain
- QPL status: for DoD contracts, only QPL-listed parts per SAE AS50151 are valid; commercial-equiv (Amphenol 97, CA Threaded) is fine for non-federal use
- Traceability: ask for MFR COC, lot date, RoHS/REACH declaration, cadmium ITAR/EAR flag
- Multi-source: Amphenol, ITT Cannon, Souriau, Glenair, Conesys, PEI-Genesis, TTI, Arrow all cross-reference MS/AS50151
- Counterfeit risk: 5015 is heavily cloned — buy screened stock for aerospace/defense, not marketplace "5015-style" without COC
7. RFQ One-Liner Template
SAE AS50151 / MIL-DTL-5015, MS3106A18-1P, aluminum OD cad, Class A, normal key, less contacts, with MS3057 clamp, qty 50, COC required, RoHS-alt finish acceptable if QPL-not-required.
8. Most Common 2026 Buying Errors
- Reading
"18-1" as "1 pin" → it's 10 × #16
- Thinking
"P" = plug → it's pin contacts; plug is
"3106"
- Ordering Class A for outdoor harness → no seal, fails
- Swapping MS310x solder body for MS345x crimp without changing contacts/tooling
- Ignoring W/X/Y/Z on duplicate adjacent connectors → cross-mating in field
- Buying "5015 18mm" by diameter guess instead of shell-size code
