MIL-DTL-5015 Circular Connectors in 2026: Why the 90-Year-Old “5015” Still Wins Rugged Jobs

A 5015 is a metal-shell, threaded-coupling, multi-pin circular connector with solder or crimp contacts, sized 8S to 48, rated roughly –55 °C to +125 °C (some builds to +200 °C), up to ~150 A per large contact, and optional grommet sealing to 30 psi / IP67. It is the lowest-cost way to push serious power and a few signal lines through a panel that gets shaken, washed, and ignored for 20 years.
What changed recently (2025–2026 angle)
- RoHS-compliant platings are now default in many catalogs. OD cadmium is still available for qualified defense programs, but black zinc cobalt, electroless nickel, and tin-zinc are the commercial winners.
- Hermetic, filter, and EMI-glass variants are expanding. Glenair’s late-2025 / 2026 MIL-DTL-5015-type catalog adds hermetic and filtered inserts for legacy aerospace boxes that cannot be redesigned to 38999.
- VG95234 is eating the European ground-vehicle market. Same insert patterns as 5015, reverse bayonet instead of thread, better EMC backshell system, EN 50155 / NATO STANAG friendly. You cannot mate VG95234 to 5015, but you can redesign pin-for-pin.
- Supply chain is consolidating. Molex–Smiths Interconnect (announced Jan 2026) and continuous QPL expansion at PEI-Genesis, Amphenol, ITT Cannon, and Conesys keep lead times stable, but small buyers feel MOQ pressure on cadmium parts.
- SWaP-C keeps 5015 alive in industrial IoT. Newer 38999 is denser and lighter, but a size 16 or 22 power plug that costs $3–10 and survives 500 mates is still the right call for factory cells, battery formation racks, and AGVs.
