1. "D38999" Is Not a Part Number
It's a family of four non-intermating series (I bayonet / II low-profile bayonet / III tri-start / IV breech-lok) under SAE/DSCC QPL as D38999/xx. A
"/26WA35PN" (Series III plug) will not mate a Series I wall rcpt, even with identical shell size. Buyers who write "38999 size 9 128-pin" get a cross-series mismatch and a scrapped harness.
2. The Finish Letter Quietly Changes the Program
- W = composite shell, conductive coat — lightest, 1500-cycle, no Cd
- F / E / G = electroless Ni aluminum — best EMI, RoHS-flexible
- Z = black ZnNi — DSCC-QPL, 500 hr salt spray, export/EU default
- N / K / Y = stainless — naval only, too heavy for airborne
- A / C = legacy Cd/OD — ITAR-flagged, new designs should avoid
Mixing W plug with Z receptacle passes mating but breaks galvanic continuity and drops 10–15 dB shielding at the coupling plane.
3. Keying Is a Separate Field, Not Optional

A D38999 without a 360° shield-terminating backshell is not EMC-compliant — the shell alone does not close the Faraday cage. RFQs that omit
"/MS3057" clamp or EMI backshell class ship connectors that fail MIL-STD-461 on the bench.
5. QPL vs "38999-Style" Is a Compliance Line, Not a Price Tier
For DoD/DoA flight-critical: only DLA QPL-listed D38999/xx from AS9100D + ITAR + NADCAP sources counts. COTS-equivalent (Glenair MCOTS, Conesys, Yolong, PEI) is fine for ground/commercial, but a "QPL-quality" claim without a QPL number is a red flag. 2026 reshoring push means lead times on true QPL hermetic

6. Hybrid Inserts Need Layout Sign-Off
Series III now ships quadrax (10 GbE), twinax (Mil-1553), RADSOK (up to 1000 A), and MT ferrules (96 fibers) inside MIL-STD-1560 arrangements. But arrangement 25-4 (heavy power) and arrangement 35 (signal-dense) are not interchangeable — putting Ethernet pairs in a power-optimized insert layout causes NEXT/FEXT crosstalk failures. The insert code is part of the part number; don't let a vendor "substitute equivalent arrangement."
